At the same time, beneficial enzymes start to build up within the gravel bed and help break down other materials. Natural filtration systems have marginal wetland plants and flowers planted directly into the gravel beds. The roots of these plants soak up nutrients in the water creating a nutrient reduced water flow back into the pond. Since the pond doesn’t have the required nutrients in the water to support unwanted growth, such as moss and algae, and other nuisance pond water plants, the water remains clear and healthy.
